Q?

What is the starting pay?

A.

As of May 2022, first-year apprentices start at $14.92 per hour plus benefits, and are eligible for raises after every 1,000 hours of on-the-job-training and with satisfactory scholastic performance.

Q?

How often do apprentices receive raises?

A.

Apprentices are eligible for raises after every 1,000 hours of on-the-job-training and with satisfactory scholastic performance.

Q?

Can I get credit for previous electrical training?

A.

In short, yes. Candidates with prior electrical training may receive some credit toward their union apprenticeship. Include documentation of your experience within your application packet and your case will be reviewed by the training committee.

Q?

Can women apply?

A.

Absolutely. Although it would be considered a non-traditional career, women make excellent electricians. We’ve had many successful women apprentices over the years, and we encourage women to apply.

Q?

Does any one part of the application process weigh any heavier than the others? (example: interview, aptitude test, etc.)?

A.

We’re looking to hire apprentices who are “all in” and see the electrical apprentice program as the foundation of a life-long career in the trade. That said, while all parts of the application process are factored into hiring decisions, the interview can oftentimes separate one candidate from another.

Q?

Who should the letters of recommendation be from?

A.

The greatest value from letters of recommendation are when they’re from teachers, professors, supervisors, commanding officers for our military candidates, or others you consider as mentors. Parents and family friends should be avoided.

Q?

If I am chosen when do I start to work?

A.

We accept applications year-round, and generally do our interviewing and hiring in the summer and fall. In some situations we may start your on-the-job training soon after you accept the position.

Q?

When do classes begin?

A.

Classes typically form in the fall of each year.

Q?

What happens if I fail my class?

A.

Every effort is made to help apprentices pass their classes and keep up with the progression of their classmates. In the event of a failed class, it is generally made available to re-take the next time it is offered. Multiple failed classes will typically get you removed from the program.

Q?

If I do not score well on the aptitude test, can I take it again?

A.

Yes, you may retake the test after a period of six (6) months has elapsed from your last test date. You will have to submit a new application and pay the processing fee.

Q?

Are there any penalties for guessing on the aptitude test?

A.

No, there are no penalties for guessing. Your score will be based on the number of questions you answer correctly.

Q?

Should I study to do better on the aptitude test?

A.

You should review the sample questions, which will be provided to you when the test is scheduled. We recommend you take our sample test here. It is suggested that you “brush up” on your Algebra and basic computation skills before taking the test, as calculators are not permitted. There is no need to memorize formulas or factual material in order to do well on the test. A good preparation tool would be the GED test preparation book which you can borrow from any public library. Applying for our apprenticeships, you are required to get a qualifying score on our aptitude test to be interviewed (unless you have documented proof of 4,000 hours of previous electrical construction experience). If you feel you may struggle on either the math or reading comprehension subjects, the Electricprep online courses may be a useful tool to help you prepare. FYI: purchasing this test prep product in no way automatically gives you advance standing or extra consideration over any other applicant. It should give you added knowledge on what the test will cover and the confidence that you are prepared when you actually take the test. GOOD LUCK!!

Q?

If I do not complete the aptitude test, can I complete it another day?

A.

No. If you do not complete all of the test, your score will be based on the questions you do complete. You will have to submit a new application and pay the processing fee.

Q?

Will I receive a report of my score?

A.

You will be informed whether or not you have received a qualifying score. Exact scores are not provided.
